University of California, Davis
Collaboration Meeting June 17-18, 2014
Summer School June 19-21, 2014
Meeting Chair: Ramona Vogt
Organizers: Daniel Cebra, Manuel Calderon and Xin-Nian Wang
The school will be limited to 50 graduate student and young postdoc participants. Financial aid covering all local expenses will be available. A recommendation letter (or email) from the student's or postdoc's adviser to the meeting chair is required for financial support. The deadline for application is May 1, 2014.
Dormitory student housing is available and will be fully supported.
There is a special UCD rate at some Davis hotels. These hotels are just offcampus and downtown (downtown is adjacent to campus). They are thus less than 15 minutes walk to/from the department. The UCD rate is applied according to availability and room type. The Aggie Inn would be anywhere from $99 to $119 plus tax. The Best Western Palm Court would be $119 for a queen bed. The Hallmark Inn would give the UCD rate, beginning at $109. The Best Western University Lodge should also have a UCD rate. Guests have to indicate upon booking that they are (or will be) working at UC Davis. The hotels all have wireless and parking. Some might include breakfast.

It is possible to fly into either the San Francisco (SFO)/Oakland (OAK) area or to fly to Sacramento (SMF). Sacramento is much closer to Davis.
The Supershuttle or Davis Airporter from SMF to UCD are around $23/person, round trip would double that but if you book both at once, there is sometimes a discount.
Flying into SFO and going to UCD takes longer. One would have to take i.e. BART to Berkeley, about 1 hour and ~$7.50, then from Berkeley BART to Amtrak, and from there to UCD. The Amtrak portion is $24 each way and takes 1 hr, 20 min when on time. There are probably other stations where one can switch to Amtrak that might be more convenient, this can be followed up for those who want this option. It is a bit more than $30 to go the whole way so not much different from the price of the Supershuttle from SMF, just longer.
There are apparently some shuttles to Davis but they are probably more expensive. They should be booked in advance.
The train is not bad since you can work. There are UCD faculty members that live in SF or the East Bay that use the train regularly. The Amtrak station is right next to downtown and a short walk to all the hotels mentioned.
The meeting and school will be held in one of the larger classrooms in the Physics Department (UCD Physics). There will not be any classes in session this week.
A password is required for wireless use but there is wireless throughout the physics building.
For people not in dormitory housing, there are a wide variety of restaurants and cafes just off campus and close to the hotels.
A complete list of restaurants organized by the type of cuisine and places to eat in Davis can be found here
It can be quite warm in Davis in June but it is dry heat, with little to nohumidity. The evenings are pleasant for walking around and eating outside.A jacket might be needed for those flying into SFO since there can be morning and evening fog.
